Boxcars were typically used for grain transportation from the early 1900’s until the 1970s when they began to be replaced by covered hoppers that were easier to unload. As grain boxcar fleets declined, the Canadian National Railway relagated the grain boxcars to branch lines which could not accommodate covered hoppers. In 1987-88, newsprint 40’ steel boxcars were converted to carry grain under a program financed by the national and Manitoba governments. These cars featured the “Government of Canada” mark and a Manitoba buffalo, becoming known as Buffalo Boxcars.
