The Erie-Lackawanna Railroad began operating on its network of 3000 miles in 1960. In 1963 it dropped the hyphen to become the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. The Erie Lackawanna once owned over 1,000 passenger cars although it did not have a formal classification system for its varied fleet, and many were not identified as EL. Lasting only 16 years, the EL remains an admired railroad.
